Sen. Lindsey Graham said China should take the financial hit related to the coronavirus pandemic for its role in the spread of COVID-19.
"If it were up to me, the whole world should send China the bill for the pandemic," Graham said Monday on Fox News. "This is the third pandemic to come out of China. They come from these wet markets where they have bats and monkeys with the virus ... intermingling with the food supply."
Graham continued: "Yeah, I'd make China pay big time."
“I will tell you, I think we need to look at the fact that China owns over a trillion dollars of our debt,” she said. “They like investing in us. And knowing that they have made a global pandemic worse than it ever would have been because of their action — they should waive some of our debt. They have caused us a tremendous amount of loss of life, loss of businesses, suffering, inconvenience, shutting down our economy.”
President Trump has harshly criticized China for not doing more to stop the spread of the virus, and he has previously referenced COVID-19 as the "Chinese virus."
Graham said with a global pandemic underway, U.S. policy toward China will be a key factor in the 2020 race for the presidency.
"Who do you want to take on China? Trump or Joe Biden?" Graham asked. "I don't think that'd be a hard decision for most people."
